McLaren MSO 720S Project Car Joins The Garage! 26 Aug 2021
If you remember all the way back to 2017, I’d ordered a McLaren MSO 720s Velocity. I then cancelled it and got stuck in to different car models instead, and I’m so glad I waited until now to get one…
The value of these cars is excellent and the performance per pound is difficult to beat. Our job over the next few months is to make this even better that it is now, but we’ll talk more about that later.
This light weight car comes in at mid-1400kg, and one the most impressive features is that this car can go from 62mph to dead stopped in just under 30 meters. The unique red paint gradient is strikingly beautiful, and under the hood, its 710bhp allows for 0-60 in sub-30 seconds.
Game changingly in the past, Mclaren launched the 650s, sporting a hydraulically linked suspension set up. The 720s runs a heavily revised version of that, but I do mean that it’s been heavily revised. Mclaren sponsored a Cambridge team of mathematical students to develop the algorithm for the suspension on the 720s, giving it a huge boost from the previous versions. This allows for enhanced road weaving ability, sensors, traction and slip angle. They’ve even developed a ‘drift mode’ which you can effortlessly programme whilst driving, to slide at your desired angle of control, all thanks to the mathematical ninjas.
From the matte red carbon fibre steering wheel to the seats with contrasting red leather detailing, all of the inner details have been carefully considered and are beautifully made. And each of the fully customisable driving settings can be changed using the interface once inside.
Boasting the most beautiful, sculptured door I’ve ever seen, the car’s exterior is fantastic to look at. The exhaust has already got the sports upgrade, but we’ll be doing even more to that, and to lots of other parts of the car, when we start work on it soon!
The plans for this car are pretty crazy beginning with new wheels, revised aero kit, a bespoke exhaust system and big horsepower. Stay tuned to see what happens with it next!
